چکیده

This paper describes our on-line handwriting mathematical expression input interface for our Intelligent Algebraic Calculation Tutoring System (ACTS). It consists of a Java-based client, which receives user’s handwriting input and displays output, and a C-based server, which recognizes hand-written symbols. Our interface provides simple and easy mathematical expression input environment. Its distinctive features are automatic stroke segmentation based on spatial relationship and time intervals of consecutive strokes, symbol recognition based on DDCPM (Directional and Direction-Change Pattern Matching) method and function buttons that help user’s input and correction. Our experiment results show that the recognition rate is 79 % for 91 kinds of symbols and 90 % for 34 kinds of restricted ones for our target domain.

A paradigm for handwriting-based intelligent tutors

This paper presents the interaction design of, and demonstration of technical feasibility for, intelligent tutoring systems that can accept handwriting input from students. Handwriting and pen input offer several affordances for students that traditional typing-based interactions do not. To illustrate these affordances, we present evidence, from tutoring mathematics, that the ability to enter p...

Error Repair in Human Handwriting - An Intelligent User Interface for Automatic On-Line Handwriting Recognition

Several important factors, such as recognition accuracy, user acceptance, and system usability, have to be considered in designing an interface of a handwriting recognition system. Since both users and recognition algorithms make mistakes, it is desirable for the user interface of a handwriting recognition system to have mechanisms recovering from errors. In this paper we address the problem of...

An Intelligent Computer Interface Utilizing Parallel Picocontrollers (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The design of an interface unit is described, in which RS232 serial data is converted to latched parallel data on 22 independent lines. The data direction of each line is programmable through the serial port. Two picocontrollers are employed in a parallel processing mode to give the required number of I/O pins, and data on the shared serial line is coded to separate data streams to the individu...
